Eco-friendly accessories for spring

Updated: Apr 29, 2020

When it comes to fast fashion, it's not only clothing, but fashion accessories that can have a big impact on the environment, but it doesn't have to be that way. From recycled jewellery to vegan handbags, there are endless sustainable accessory options to complement your spring and summer wardrobe. Why not try out these top brands to add that something extra to a simple outfit?

Just Trade

Just Trade is an ethical brand which has been selling handmade jewellery and accessories since 2006. Founded by designer Laura Cave, the brand works with small fair-trade projects in Ecuador, Peru, India and Vietnam to create unique handmade products. Through combining traditional craft skills with expert knowledge of contemporary jewellery, they have produced a range of characterful pieces such as crocheted silver work and carved tagua pendants. The brand emphasises its commitment to the principles of fair trade such as good working conditions, fair payment and transparency and accountability. From necklaces and earrings to handbags and purses, you'll be sure to find something you love or the perfect gift for a friend/family member.

Aitch Aitch

Aitch Aitch is a luxury handbag company founded in 2017 by Hailey Harmon which utilises sustainable materials and production processes. Each product is produced using salmon skin which is sourced from organic and sustainable fishing farms in Europe. The material is dyed and tanned using non-toxic and non-chemical processes to reduce the impact on the environment. Despite how thin the material is, it is surprisingly durable and resilient, meaning the products are a worthwhile and long-term investment. The company has been awarded the Butterfly Mark from the Positive Luxury Organisation through upholding industry-wide standards which minimise their environmental footprint.

Aitch Aitch produces bags to suit every woman. The brand defines its purpose as to "design pieces for the inspired woman" who is "thoughtful, passionate, adventurous and lives a full life." Whether you're on the hunt for an everyday back pack or an evening clutch bag, you're bound to find something suitable for any occasion.

A Woven Plane

A Woven Plane is a company run by two women who struggled to find any good quality socks in current shops and so made it their mission to change that. They now sell socks for women in simple colours which are made from woven yarn and are produced in an Italian factory. The company selected a merino wool which is an Egyptian cotton blend and is an active fibre material which keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It is free from toxic substances and damaging chemicals and is a high-quality material which means the socks stay new for longer.

A Woven Plane also uses sustainable paper packaging for items, made from coffee cup waste and virgin fibres. The products are then mailed with 100% recycled plastic bags which helps prevent even more potential waste. They're not the cheapest socks out there, but if you are looking for a quality pair of socks to last a long time they are worth the investment.

Matt & Nat

Matt & Natt is a vegan handbag brand which is committed to finding new and innovative ways to stay sustainable. The idea behind the brand was based around the synergy between materials and nature and the possibilities of the world around us. The brand highly values social responsibility, inclusiveness, learning and authenticity and through incorporating the textures and hues of nature, their pieces reflect the beautiful environment we live in. They emphasise this through not using leather or any other animal-based materials and through experimenting with recycled alternatives such as nylon, cardboard, rubber and cork. The newest addition to their material collection is recycled bicycle tyres.

Matt & Natt also produce footwear and outerwear as well as small vegan goods such as belts, key chains and dog accessories. The brand offers different styles of bag including clutch bags, crossbody bags, satchels and backpacks. At affordable prices, you can rest assured you've purchased a quality item whilst protecting the planet.

otiumberg

Otiumberg is a British jewellery brand founded in 2014 which produces modern pieces through conscious and transparent processes. 99% of the gold used in the jewellery is recycled and sourced from ethical minors whose extraction processes are regulated. All items are packaged in boxes made from 70% FSC paper with the other 30% being recycled paper. The jewellery is also protected in a small pouch made from cotton which is completely recyclable.

Otiumberg offers a wide range of jewellery pieces including earrings, rings, bracelets and anklets. There is also the option to personalise any item on the site, making it easy to find the perfect gift for family and friends. You can choose to build your own necklace or earrings and also personalise it with any birthstone for a more unique and original gift.

Hara

Hara, meaning Hindi, is a sustainable clothing brand which produces hair scrunchies for women. They prioritise sustainable and ethical practices in order to raise awareness and make changes to the fashion industry. Hara was founded in 2016 by Allie Cameron who witnessed the impact of the industry on our planet whilst travelling in India. She found that chemical runoff and plastic use was drastically damaging the environment and decided that something needed to change. One year later she was in Indonesia exploring how clothing is produced and the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as natural dyes.

Hara has teamed up with the Environmental Justice Foundation to support projects surrounding the use of pesticides and chemicals in cotton production. Since 2000 EJF has campaigned to protect the natural environment and human health and has managed to internationally ban the use of the pesticide Endosulfan. Bamboo fabric is used to produce the items as no pesticides are used to grow it and it does not require a large amount of water. The Scrunchies are made in a range of colours and are all reasonably priced at under ten pounds.
